Talladega Parks and Rec Archery Team wins big at ARPA State Tournament

(Talladega, AL) The City of Talladega Parks and Recreation Department youth archery team won a slew of trophies at the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) State Tournament last weekend in Dothan, AL. In the 12 and under Girls Division, Queen Earth earned 1st place, Abby Smith placed 2nd, and Izabel Herrin won 3rd. Levi Scaife took 1st in the 12 and under Boys Division for the second year in a row, and DeAnna Herrin took home 3rd in the 14 and under Girls Division.

"These kids worked hard all summer and shot their personal best at the tournament. I could not be more proud of them," said Program Coordinator Luke Thomas, who has served as the archery instructor for seven year.

"I believe I speak for many Talladega residents when I say that we are beyond proud of our archery team," said City Manager Derrick Swanson. "Our community is fortunate to have such disciplined athletes who worked hard to earn their trophies. I also commend their instructor, Luke Thomas, who is clearly committed to helping our youth achieve their goals."

In addition to being one of the oldest sports in the world, archery is among the nation’s fastest growing sports. Talladega Parks and Recreation formed its first archery team in 2017.  Each year, Talladega’s team competes in the ARPA State Archery Tournament.

“Archery is a fun sport that helps instill discipline, patience, and confidence while also helping to improve focus and teach teamwork skills," said Talladega Parks and Recreation Director Summer Ammons.  “In addition to archery, we offer basketball, baseball, t-ball, softball, soccer, flag football, cheerleading, ballet, track and field, zumba, pickleball, and diverse aquatic programs. We also have activities for seniors, an indoor walking trail, a fitness zone and more.”
