City employee earns two new certifications

(Talladega, AL) Leighanne Jones, who serves as an accounts payable/payroll clerk in the City of Talladega Finance Department, recently completed the Certification Training Institute for Alabama Municipal Revenue Officers Program and the Certified Governmental Accounting Technician Program. She secured both certifications from the University of Alabama.

City Manager Derrick Swanson and Finance Director Shaneeka Phillips both applauded Jones, who worked on the two two-year certification programs simultaneously.

"My chief priorities include employee development, which promotes job satisfaction, increases productivity and helps expand opportunities for advancement," said City Manager Derrick Swanson. "I commend Ms. Jones for working diligently to secure certifications that will make her a greater asset to the finance department."

Phillips added, "Cross training has been a goal for my department for the past year, and Ms. Jones has helped set the tone by securing two certifications. She is now versed in four distinct disciplines of accounting - payroll, general ledger, purchasing and fund accounting. The knowledge she gained through her certification programs will help equip the department as a whole to function with greater efficiency.”

Jones stated, "I now have a much greater understanding of what each and every role in this office entails.  As a result, I am better prepared to serve the public and assist my colleagues."
